You know yourself better than I. First ask yourself what you will need. Then go through your life acknowledging everything that you need to function. Bring these things or at least versions of them. Ex. You need to cook, bring a camping stove.

Time off of work: understand that for most you will not have a source of income. This may require a change of life styles and comforts that you are used while you held the job.
Fuel:
Your car: Gas is a pretty penny, to get across the country while seeing all there was to along the way came into $2500. Granted we did a lot of extra driving with a car that only took premium gas. We expect about $6000 to go all the way around the country.

You:
Food, there are many ways to take this on. As for us, we ate non-refrigerated, simple foods that did not require a kitchen. We then would eat the local foods when it was unique enough to capture our interest.
